These days, most people have trouble sleeping; if you don't, you're probably retired. Many people have turned to sleeping pills, but contrary to popular belief, you don't need 'scripts’ to fall asleep easily. There are a few good tips I've learned over the years that I use whenever I have trouble going to sleep.
TIPS 1
DO NOT THINKING ABOUT TOMORROW IN YOUR BED. If you are kept up at night thinking about stuff you have to do the next day, it helps to write out everything you need to do on a sheet of paper to keep your mind off it.
TIPS 2
GET PREPARED FOR TOMORROW. Parallel to idea above, have everything you need for the next day done ahead of time. Lay out your outfit, make your lunch if need be, or pack your book bag/briefcase so it's ready to go in the morning. Having everything ready for the next day puts you more at ease and helps you relax.
TIPS 3
NO EXERCISE. If you exercise, make sure you do it earlier in the day, preferably after school or work; if you're a real trooper, you can work out early in the morning before you start your day, but that's mainly just for morning people. Having a good work out early in the day helps get out the extra energy your body may be storing so it's easier to fall asleep at night.
TIPS 4
AVOID CAFFEIN. Don't drink any caffeinated drinks after 5pm. Most experts say to not drink caffeine 8 hours before bed, but for me that just isn't plausible since I usually have a cup of coffee around 4 or 5pm and sometimes sneak a Coke at dinner. Caffeine can have a huge impact on whether or not you can fall asleep, so try not to drink it at night if you can.
TIPS 5
NO TV / COMPUTER. Stay away from the computer or TV before going to sleep. Staying up watching TV or playing a video will most likely be the cause of you seeing those images even after you close your eyes to sleep. Reading is the best thing to do before bed, preferably a magazine that you can browse. Fortune magazine puts me right out.
TIPS 6
MELATONIN. Melatonin is a substance that is naturally produced in your body that makes you feel sleepy. Thanks to the advances in today's society, melatonin now comes in a bottle. For me personally, this is one of the best ways to fall asleep; you can pick up a bottle of this natural substance at your local drugstore. It comes in three different doses, so use your discretion in selecting the one right for you.
Hopefully these tips will help you as much as they've helped me when it comes to falling asleep. So next time you find yourself tossing and turning in bed, think about my advice before you reach for a possibly habit forming and sleep-walking inducing bottle of pills.
